about

An hysterical tribute to a great artist who at 40 taught himself to paint. Take the Power of Uh-uh!

lyrics

DAN: “There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it.”

David: Oh man, did you just quote: Marta Graham

Dan: Mais oui!

David:
Once upon a time there was a man named Henri Rousseau. One day at 40 years old he decided to become a painter. SO he taught himself to paint. No training or teachers. He took the little money he had and bought a canvas and paint and didn’t know one day he’d be great! It just didn’t occur to him to not do it. He showed his paintings to the art world and was mocked and told he was crap.

Dan: So he stopped painting.

David: NO he didn’t he said Uh-hu!
And kept with the painting

Henri Roussea
Fo fo fo fo
Painted with his heart
Beaux beaux beaux arts!
Didn’t care what they say
(On the) Champs-Élylées
Jungle in his eyes
French French French Fries

David:
Henri Rousseau just kept painting and showing his work to anyone who would see it. Ridiculed and poor he didn’t care, he just kept painting all the cool things he saw like flowers in the gardens botanical! He watched them explode in his studio! Tigers leapt about his apartment! Deserts splayed out before him endless.. like his desire and his passion.
And still the art world told him he was crap.

Dan: So he stopped painting

David: NO NO NON! Listen to the story! He didn’t! He said Uh-hu!
And kept with the painting

Henri Roussea
Fo fo fo fo
Painted with his heart
Beaux beaux beaux arts!
Didn’t care what they say
(On the) Champs-Élylées
Jungle in his eyes
French French French Toast

David:
Henri Rousseau hung with all the cool people and, even though broke, gave children free violin lessons! He just kept doing what his heart told him to do! And one day he came into fame! He was renown as the supreme artist he was! Without permission, without apology, without regard for critics or infulencers. He just did it and didn’t care if he was famous or people thought he was crap.

Dan: And then he stopped painting

David: WHAT! No! Why do you keep saying that he never… Well yea he died….. But only after he said Uh-hu!

Uh-hu, Uh-hu, No, Non, Nein, Nej, Tidak, Girl please
I Googled that, because it turns out every single language in the galaxy has an expression which means Uh-hu!
Because apparently we all need to say it a lot more! What if that is the magical incantation to remove all the stuff that’s blocking us from ourselves? Let’s say it! Uh-hu! Uh-hu! Uh-hu!

They tell us Henri Rousseau never made it to the actually desert or jungle but he yeah, he did! And he brought all of us there.
